The Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate (4 Stars)

The Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate (Tyndale House Publishers)

Do you journal your prayers?  Do you keep track of them on paper and put them in boxes?  Iola Anne Poole did.  She had a most remarkable life, full of hurt and loneliness, but she learned some wonderful lessons from Sister Marguerite when she was a little girl, “Remember that you are God’s, not theirs.”

Tandi Jo Reese and her two children were running away from a messy past and Tandi has a lot to learn about herself and being a good parent.  She was living in the rental cottage that Miss Iola owns, and then one day Tandi finds that Miss Iola, at ninety-one, has passed away.  Tandi is mostly concerned for herself and her children, wondering what will happen to them, but even in death, Miss Iola is looking out for them.  She gave her house and property to the church that is located beside her and the pastor is letting Tandi remain in the cottage in exchange for helping clean out part of the old house.  That’s when Tandi discovers Miss Iola’s many, many prayer boxes.

So many things happen in this book, heart-breaking, mysterious, and even a little romance.  But the main theme is to give yourself to God and have a personal relationship with Him.  To pour out your heart to Him, regularly, and tell Him everything.  Iola’s letters in her prayer boxes are wonderful.  I did get angry and Tandi several times, she kept doing the same thing to her kids that she hated from her past.  But, then I thought, we do the same thing, we want to do better, but our flesh is sometimes much stronger.  Romans 7:19,24-25 “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing…What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Miss Iola is full of secrets and now the whole town depends on her legacy, will Tandi be able to rise above her past and help? You’ll have to read this book to find out all the wonderful treasures inside.  And don’t forget after finishing the book to read The Note From The Author. It ties the book and whole prayer box concept up…it a tidy box!  You can visit www.LisaWingate.com for more info about making your own prayer box.

Lisa Wingate is an award-winning journalist, magazine columnist, popular inspirational speaker and a national bestselling author of 16 books.  Her first mainstream novel, Tending Roses, is in its fifteenth printing from Penguin Putnam.  Tending Roses is a staple on the shelves of national bookstore chains as well as in many independent bookstores.

Recently, Lisa’s Blue Sky Hill Series, set in Dallas, received national attention with back-to-back nominations for American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year Award for A Month of Summer (2009) and The Summer Kitchen(2010). In 2011, Lisa’s Novel, Never Say Never, won the American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year Award.  Pithy, emotional, and inspirational, her stories bring to life characters so real that readers often write to ask what is happening to them after the book ends.

Lisa is one of a select group of authors to find success in both the Christian and mainstream markets, writing for both Bethany House, a Christian publisher, and NAL Penguin Putnam, in mainstream fiction.  Her bestselling books have become a hallmark of inspirational southern fiction. Her works have been featured by the National Reader’s Club of America, AOL Book Picks, Doubleday Book Club, the Literary Guild, American Profiles and have been chosen for numerous awards.

When not busy dreaming up stories, Lisa spends time on the road as a motivational speaker. Via internet, she shares with readers as far away as India, where her book, Tending Roses, has been used to promote women’s literacy, and as close to home as Tulsa, Oklahoma, where the county library system has used Tending Roses to help volunteer mentors teach adults to read.  Recently, the group Americans for More Civility, a kindness watchdog organization, selected Lisa along with Bill Ford, Camille Cosby, and six others, as recipients of the National Civies Award, which celebrates public figures who work to promote greater kindness and civility in American life.

This book will be donated to the Media Center for our patrons to check out.
