  • FREE (4/1 – 6/30):  Courting Kate (The Courtships of Lancaster County #1) by Leslie Gould.  We DO have this in the Media Center.  But since it’s free and you have an e-reader, it would be a great addition to your collection.
  • FREE (4/1 – 6/30): Waiting for Summer’s Return (Heart of the Prairie #1) by Kim Vogel Sawyer.  We DO have this in the Media Center.  But since it’s free and you have an e-reader, it would be a great addition to your collection.

A Christmas Gift for Rose by Tricia Goyer – 5 Stars

Deeply Moving Amish Novella (5 Stars)

cover35047-mediumA Christmas Gift for Rose by Tricia Goyer (Zondervan – 2013)

This is a sweet, deeply emotional story about a young Amish woman named Rose, who finds out something about her past that devastates her to her very core.  And on top of that she is angry at Jonathan Fisher, the man she planned on marrying.  He is Amish, yet he joined the Army, not to fight, but to go as a Medic to help those who were wounded.  The Amish community doesn’t know exactly what to do now that he’s back and Rose doesn’t know how this is going to affect her.  But when she learns the truth about herself, she is really confused.

There are two other english men, one who is really suffering from what we know today as PTSD, and Jonathan and the other ex-soldier, Curtis, visits him with hopes of helping him deal with the devastation of all he saw in the war.  All the while, Rose is trying to deal with her own problems and trying to figure out if there is a future for her and Jonathan after all.

This novella is wonderful.  I loved every minute and had a hard time putting it down. I think anyone who reads this sweet story will be touched.

I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest opinion and did not receive any compensation for a favorable review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Please take the time to click on Tricia’s name and Zondervan’s name under the picture of the book and check out their websites.

Christmas in Apple Ridge by Cindy Woodsmall (5 Stars)

Wonderful Amish Christmas Novels (5 Stars for each one!)

cover

The Sound of Sleigh Bells:  This is a heart-warming story of Beth Hertzler who has been hiding herself from love, ever since her fiancé died.  She wears black and avoids all the single’s activities and has resigned herself to never fall in love again.  She lives with her Aunt Lizzy, helps her run their store and she takes care of all the ordering and selling.  One day her Aunt Lizzy ends up in another Amish community and sees a beautiful wood carving and she buys it and brings it home.  Beth is immediately drawn to the beauty of the carving, it’s the most excitement Lizzy has seen in her niece in a very long time.  Lizzy uses a bit of creative manipulation in getting Beth and the carver, Jonah “who is called the Old Man” to write each other.  This is a wonderful “pen-pal” type of relationship and they immediately connect.  But each one thinks they are writing to someone else.  What will happen when they discover who they are really writing too?  And will the hurt and trickery be something they can overcome?  This is a wonderful love story, one of hurts, pain, disappointments and how letting God touch your very soul can heal anything and bring joy in the most unexpected ways.  Here’s a wonderful quote  from the book:

“Well, time and medicine and family would have eventually helped, but during the worst of it, I caught a glimpse of how Jesus let go of His anger.  Just a fraction of a second, mind you, but I saw Him on the cross, looking beyond the people who’d put Him there and to the Father He trusted.  It seemed that He didn’t hold the people accountable because He wasn’t looking at them.  When in the worst pain, He kept his focus on everything above.”

The Christmas Singing:  This was a delicious novel because the main character, Mattie, is the owner of Mattie Cakes.  She designs and bakes specialty cakes and all other types of delicious sweets!  She has a notebook full of drawings, magazine clippings, and notes that she has been collecting since she was a young girl.  And Gideon, her best friend, helped her with her notebook and listened to her talk about her dreams.  They were bound to fall in love, then something happened and Gideon broke Mattie’s heart.  She left Apple Ridge and moved to Ohio to another Amish community and lived near her brother and sister-in-law and their family.  She even met a new man, Sol.  He seemed perfect for her.  Yet, nothing was like it was with Gideon!  Then a tragedy struck Mattie and her life was suddenly turned upside down.  Who would really be there for her, Sol or Gideon?  Could she trust Gideon and what was he hiding?  You’ll love this book!  I think this may be my favorite!  Could it be all the delicious cakes????

The Dawn of Christmas: This book is about Sadie Yoder.  She was marrying Daniel Miller until he broke her heart before the wedding.  Then she decided she was through with men and would devote her life to mission work.  She’d already been to Peru once and was back home making crafts saving money to go back again.  But her family would not let up…they kept trying their best to matchmake and she was so tired of it.  Many miles away, back in “The Sound of Sleigh Bells”, there was Levi.  He lived with his brother and nephew.  He decided women were not worth the trouble either and was tired of his family matchmaking.  Then Sadie and Levi met and forged a strange friendship.  They came up with a scheme to keep both of their families off their backs about marriage.  But would this plan backfire?  Probably.  And what of Sadie’s old boyfriend, Daniel?  This is a great novel, full of doubt, love, distrust, and the learning of how to love and trust again…and who to trust because some people lie so well.

You’ll love each one of these books.  They are sold separately, but I loved reading them all together in this order.  They are separate books with separate stories, but the characters and communities are the same in all three books and it’s neat to be able to see the lives of the other character’s as you read the next book.

I received a copy of this book for free from Blogging for Books, WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for the purpose of this review and for my honest opinion and did not receive any compensation for a favorable review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

For Every Season (Amish Vines and Orchards, Book 3) by Cindy Woodsmall (5 Stars)

Amish Fiction at it’s Best!!!

fes_lg

For Every Season (Amish Vines and Orchards, Book 3) by Cindy Woodsmall

The story continues with Rhoda, Samuel, and Jacob.  They have moved to Maine with some of their families and Landon, the Englisher, and are working hard to establish the run-down orchard before harvest.  Working on the orchard is easy compared to working on their relationships.  Rhoda and Jacob are still in love and trying so hard to make their relationship work, but Jacob’s past still keeps getting in the way.  He’s always running off to help Sandra and Casey.  He’s finally getting smart and learning that he needs to give his all in working things out with Rhoda, but lies are still turning up.

Then there’s Leah, who takes it on herself to invite Iva, from another Amish community, to come join their community and give them the extra help they need with the household chores.  When the brothers find out about what she’s done, they are not exactly what I would call “happy”.  But as with all things, God has a plan and it seems like His hand was in this move.  Iva had her own reasons for leaving her family and she’s trying very  hard to fit in with the the new Orchard Bend Farm.

Meanwhile, more and more information is surfacing about Camilla and Bob, who Rhoda is living with, and she’s still hearing voices.  She’s getting help from Landon to help her track down leads on what she’s learning and if you thought the last book was mysterious, then you’re in for more mystery!  It’s hard to say more, because I don’t want to spoil this book by telling too much.  All I will say is that some things are resolved and some things aren’t!

I’m so thankful that there will be a final book in this series, Seasons of Tomorrow,  coming in April 2014.  This has been a fantastic Amish series and I have enjoyed every book so much. Once I get started reading, it’s hard to put the book down.  Cindy has a way of drawing you into the story and getting you so involved with the characters you’ll find yourself being drawn into the book like you are one of the characters.  I love these kinds of books, when I finally finish them I feel like I’ve lost some great friends and sometimes, gladly getting rid of some characters I don’t like!

You don’t want to miss this series…you have to start with A Season of Tending #1, then you will want to immediately pick up, The Winnowing Season #2, then hurry to read this book and then wait until April 2014 before we can finally discover all the mystery and discover all the characters true loves!

Women’s Book Club Meeting Information for September 21, 2013

For the past two meetings we have been reading and discussing Cindy Woodsmall’s series, Amish Vines & Orchards.  The final book, For Every Season, is coming out on August 20, 2013 and in order to keep the momentum going, we are moving our meeting from September 7th, 2013 TO September 21, 2013. That will give everyone enough time to get the book and read it before our meeting.

We can’t wait to see how Cindy brings this story to a close.  Who will Rhoda end up with, Samuel or Jacob?  What about Leah, will she leave the Amish like she’s always said she would do…maybe she ends up with Landon.  And what about that elderly couple in the woods and Rhoda’s strange visions of her sister and the voices she keeps hearing?  Oh, we can’t wait to read this book!!!

So friends, mark your calendars for Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 9:30amWe will be meeting at Carmen’s home this time.  Look for more information about the menu and directions in emails from Carmen.  Carmen has already ordered the books, so if you missed out on the order you can either buy a copy yourself (I’m sure The Carpenter’s Shop will have them in-stock) or download to your e-reader, or come in and read the Media Center copy.  If you plan on reading our copy, please come in soon and put your name on the waiting list, so everyone will have a chance to read the book before the meeting.  Don’t wait until the last two weeks before the meeting and all of you come in at once…it just won’t work…been there, done that!

You can visit Cindy’s website and read an excerpt from the upcoming book by clicking HERE.

Here is a YouTube video of Cindy talking about how and why she became a writer.  This video was made in 2010 (which was the year that we actually got to have our meeting with her at The Carpenter’s Shop…what a great meeting that was!).

An Unforgivable Secret (Amish Secrets #1) by J.E.B. Spredemann

Powerful Story of Forgiveness (4 Stars)

27d17f_1dcc76b62c0285021c157d184668bcc6.jpg_srz_302_453_75_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz

An Unforgivable Secret (Amish Secrets #1) by J.E.B. Spredemann

This is a powerful story of one woman’s past that has effected her whole life.  Hannah Stolzfus is a sweet Amish young woman and her beau, Christian Glick, are going to get married.  But before that, Christian has something important to take care of.  When Hannah finds out that Christian was seeing someone else, she is heart broken and she makes a huge mistake.  One that follows her for years.  She forgives Christian and they marry and he has changed and loves her very much and they are having a good life.  That is until everything starts to fall apart.

I really don’t want to say more about the story, because the best part of reading a good book is not knowing what is going to happen, but to discover it piece by piece yourself.  To let it grab you unexpectedly and touch your heart in ways that I don’t think it can if you know it’s coming.  Have tissues handy and be ready for God to touch your heart as you read this book.

I received a complimentary e-book copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion and did not receive any compensation for a favorable review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

This book is only available on e-book.  The current price is $2.99 on Kindle.

Friends, Food, Fellowship and Fiction

The Women’s Book Club met this morning to discuss, The Winnowing Season (Amish Vines & Orchards #2) by Cindy Woodsmall

The Winnowing Season July 13 2013.001

We had a wonderful time this morning.  Of course we ALWAYS have a wonderful time, but today I think we could have stayed all day laughing and talking and sharing our thoughts about this book.  Carolyn said she had recently read an article about how laughter released endorphins in our brains…if that’s so then our brains are full of endorphins right now!

For those of you who haven’t been to one of our meetings, we always start with breakfast, with each person bringing something.  Well, today I thought I would just list the food we had to make your mouth water and give you a good reason to start coming to our meetings. 🙂  We had:  2 different breakfast casseroles, hashbrown casserole, bacon (I think it was turkey bacon), banana nut bread, cream cheese sausage squares, fruit bowl (cantelope, strawberries, grapes, blueberries),  biscuits and jellies, juice, water and coffee! It was all delicious! (The only thing missing was grits!  We are Southern girls after all , and it’s almost a sin if you don’t have grits for breakfast!) 🙂

Carmen did another wonderful job on the handouts she gives us with questions to discuss.  Each handout had it’s own set of questions and we had 11…we only got to #6, but I think with all the discussion we covered just about everything except the strange happenings with Rhoda and the voices she’s hearing and the strange couple that lives in the woods.  We wonder what’s going on, but we figure that Cindy has that all taken care of in Book 3, For Every Season, that releases on August 20, 2013.  We can’t wait to see how Cindy wraps up this whole story.  Some of us are on “Team Jacob” and some on “Team Samuel” in regards to who we want to see Rhoda end up with.  It was a very lively discussion!!!!

Carmen thinks that with the late release of Book 3, we won’t have enough time to get it in and out to everyone to read in time for our September 14, 2013 meeting, so she’s in the process of deciding between two other books for the September meeting and then we’ll pick back up with, For Every Season, for our November  9th meeting.  We all wish Cindy had been with us for this meeting, I bet she would have just sat back and laughed and laughed at all of our opinions about the characters and what they should and shouldn’t do and what’s going on and what’s going to happen next!

We have two new members, Lindsey and Ella, who’s going to join us in September and we would love to have you!  If you come to our church or if you live close to us in Winterville, GA, we would love to have you join us.  Just drop by the Media Center or email us at wfbcmediacenter@gmail.com or comment on this post and we’ll fill you in on all the details.

I’ll post the information about our September meeting as soon as Carmen decides on our book.  If you would like to host the meeting just let Carmen know or come by the Media Center.

God’s blessings on all of you! And happy reading!

Women’s Book Club – The Winnowing Season by Cindy Woodsmall

July 2013 Book Club Selection

July 2013 Book Club Selection

Our Book Club will be meeting on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 9:30am in the home of Karen.  We will be discussing, The Winnowing Season (Amish Vines & Orchards #2) by Cindy Woodsmall.  For those of you who read, A Season of Tending, Book 1, you know that it ended leaving us all up in the air!  Now the story continues and we are looking forward to a wonderful meeting with breakfast and a great discussion of the book.  I’m sure Carmen has some wonderful questions to guide us through the book.

This will be a very special meeting because we will be meeting at Karen “new” home, which was her mom, Dyanne’s.  We still miss Dyanne and can feel her presence with us at every Book Club meeting.  And it will be like old times getting together at Dyanne’s old home, and seeing all the new renovations and touches that Karen has done to the house to make it hers.

Book Club 04

One of our first meetings at Dyanne’s (in orange shirt) home in 2004. We discussed The Sister Circle by Vonette Bright and Nancy Moser.

If you haven’t read the book yet, you’ve still got plenty of time.  You can buy a copy at The Carpenter’s Shop or buy a e-book or come by the Media Center and check it out.  Once you get started reading it, you will not want to put it down.  It’s that good!  Can’t wait for Book 3 that’s coming out in September.

The Winnowing Season by Cindy Woodsmall – Another Cliffhanger!

The Winnowing Season (Amish Vines & Orchards #2) by Cindy Woodsmall

Scan 131350000

After reading, A Season of Tending #1, I couldn’t wait to get into this book. It takes off running! Rhoda, Samuel, Jacob, Leah and others make the big move to Maine to a rundown house and orchard. Can they make it work? What about Jacob and his past? Will it continue to haunt him in Maine and can his and Rhoda’s romance survive the strain? And really strange things begin happening with Rhoda, seeing her sister, Emma, and hearing voices…what do they mean? And a new elderly couple are introduced in this book and there is a mystery surrounding them, but…as with the first book, it’s a cliffhanger. Can’t wait for Book 3, For Every Season, coming this Fall.

We Had A Great Time Today at Book Club

We had 7 members at our meeting  this morning to discuss, A Season of Tending (Amish Vines & Orchards #1) by Cindy Woodsmall.  Of course the food was delicious, but the conversation was even better!  No calories in talking.  We talked so much we probably burned off all the calories we ate!  I doubt that, but it would be nice if that could happen.

This book was so good.  And talk about a cliff hanger!  We are all so glad that the second book is already out, The Winnowing Season, and some of us have already read it or are currently reading it.  We had to be careful and not let any of the secrets out during our discussion.  We will be reading the sequel at our next meeting in July.  More details will follow.

We missed those who couldn’t be here today and hope you’ll be able to make it next time.
